The Society is often asked the same questions so the aim of this page is to gather them together for information for both members and non-members.
Can the Society Assist with the Disposal of a Layout?
When a member or relative passes away, the Society is sometimes asked if it can assist in the disposal of a layout, models and/or books.
The Society Shop was once able to offer assistance in respect of the disposal of such items. Unfortunately the continuing downward trend in the value of second-hand stock together with increasing costs involved in collecting and transporting it, meant we had to discontinue such activities. Books and magazines are especially difficult to move, due to their weight and therefore potentially higher transport costs involved.
However, there are a number of very reputable model railway shops who will purchase and collect models such as Hattons and Rails of Sheffield, for whom a search on the internet will reveal contact details. Alternatively, railway modelling magazines, such as ‘Railway Modeller’, carry adverts by dealers who also buy second-hand stock.
Can I Pay my Membership by Direct Debit or Standing Order?
At the moment, for the size of the Society, it is felt that the existing payment methods (cheque, debit/credit card, PayPal) are sufficient.
For Direct Debits, the Society would be required to register as a direct debit collector. For Standing Orders, in the event of a change in subscription or fees, it would be necessary to contact and request members to amend their arrangement. Neither payment method is suitable for the three-year renewal option.
