In 1976, 39 wagons were built for the Ministry of Defence to transport light armoured vehicles. They were TOPS coded PFB, indicating that while air-braked, they carried a through vacuum pipe. A second batch was built-in 1981 and as the through pipe was not fitted, they were coded PFA. Subsequently, all were recoded either KFB or KFA and during routine maintenance, the through vacuum pipes were removed so that now they are all coded KFA. The wagons are used to transport armoured vehicle around the UK between army garrisons and training areas, or between military ports such as Marchwood and storage areas at Ashchurch and Donnington.
